"How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word... I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." - Psalm 119:9, 11
Why We Prioritize Scripture Memory
When our kids face challenges, make decisions, or need encouragement, we want God's Word to be readily available in their hearts and minds. But let's be honest - memorizing verses can feel like a chore, especially for young children.
That's why we've developed fun, engaging ways to hide God's Word in our hearts together!
Our Top 5 Scripture Memory Methods
1. The "Erase a Word" Game
Write the verse on a whiteboard. Each time you recite it together, erase one word. Keep going until the entire board is blank and you can recite the whole verse from memory!
Why it works: It's visual, interactive, and builds confidence gradually.
2. Scripture Memory Songs
Set verses to familiar tunes like:
- "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"
- "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"
- "Happy Birthday"
Example: Try Philippians 4:13 to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle"!
3. Motion Memory
Create hand motions for key words in the verse. Our kids LOVE acting out the verses, and the physical movement helps cement them in memory.
Pro tip: Let the kids create their own motions - they'll remember better!
4. Scripture Art Projects
The kids illustrate the verse with drawings, paintings, or crafts. We display these around the house as constant reminders.
Bonus: Great for visual learners and doubles as meaningful room decor!
5. Family Memory Challenges
- Week 1: Learn verse together
- Week 2: Race to see who can say it fastest
- Week 3: Say it while doing silly actions
- Week 4: Recite it in different voices (robot, whisper, opera singer)
Our Current Memory Verses
We focus on one verse per month. Here's our lineup:
- January: Deuteronomy 6:5 - "Love the Lord your God with all your heart..."
- February: Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart..."
- March: Philippians 4:13 - "I can do all things through Christ..."
- April: Psalm 119:105 - "Your word is a lamp to my feet..."
Tips for Success
- Start small - Even one verse a month is a victory!
- Review regularly - Repetition is key
- Make it fun - If it feels like punishment, they'll resist
- Celebrate progress - Small rewards for milestones
- Lead by example - Let them see YOU memorizing too
The Impact We've Seen
Just last week, our 7-year-old quoted Philippians 4:13 when facing a difficult math problem. Our 5-year-old reminded their sibling of "love one another" during a disagreement. These moments make all the effort worthwhile!
Know God through His Word. Love God by treasuring it in your heart. Serve God by living it out.
