The Reformation brought important truths back to the center of Christian faith. These truths are summarized in the 5 Solas, five Latin phrases that capture what the Reformers taught from Scripture. This week-long lesson plan helps families teach these foundational truths to children in a simple, memorable way.
Use this during Reformation Week (late October), back-to-school time, or any week you want to focus on these core Gospel truths with your family!
5 Solas Lesson Plan for Kids (Ages 6-10)
Reformation Week Bible Club
Day 1: Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Simple Explanation: The Bible is God's Word and our #1 rule book for faith. We don't need to follow other rules that aren't in the Bible.
Activity Idea: Have kids hold up their Bibles and practice finding books. Emphasize the Bible is our ultimate authority.
Day 2: Solus Christus (Christ Alone)
Key Verse: Acts 4:12
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."
Simple Explanation: Only Jesus saves us! We can't be saved by being good, going to church, or doing nice things. Only Jesus.
Activity Idea: Draw or color a cross. Talk about how Jesus is the only bridge between us and God.
Day 3: Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)
Key Verse: Ephesians 2:8-9
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithāand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godānot by works, so that no one can boast."
Simple Explanation: Grace means getting a gift we don't deserve. We can't earn our way to heavenāit's God's free gift!
Activity Idea: Give each child a small wrapped gift to illustrate grace. Explain they didn't earn it; you just gave it because you love them.
Day 4: Sola Fide (Faith Alone)
Key Verse: Romans 5:1
"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Simple Explanation: We are saved by believing and trusting in Jesus, not by doing good works. Faith is trusting Jesus like you trust a chair to hold you up!
Activity Idea: Chair trust exerciseāsit in a chair to show what faith/trust means. We trust Jesus completely to save us.
Day 5: Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone)
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 10:31
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
Simple Explanation: Everything we do should point people to God and make Him look great! God gets all the credit for our salvation.
Activity Idea: Have kids share ways they can glorify God this week (helping, sharing, being kind, obeying). Make a poster: "I can glorify God by..."
